Not many people are aware of the fact that pectus is quite common out there. For those who do not know what Pectus is, it is a disease that can occur to people during their teenage. Normally the diseases starts around the age of seven. Pectus occurs in the chest area as where the center area between the lungs sinks in. It is caused by several ribs and the sternum that do not grow normally. So the obvious appearance is a sunken chest. It can either be present at birth or not develop until puberty. Not many teenagers are aware of such deformity because it grows as they are getting older so many may think that it is normal.
The best way of solving the problem is through the Nuss procedure. What is basically done during this procedure is that a flat of metal is placed right underneath the sunken area so that the chest will look closer to being normal. There could be scars, though. If this procedure is done to a very young person around the age of 7 or younger, the flat metal can be removed when they are older because the ribs and skin should reshape.
